The main character John Proctor in my eyes, is a good man, yet he had a some strong feelings for Abigail. Those strong feelings which were sexual desire for Abigail Williams, led to affairs with her. They had a trail because she accused John's wife for doing witchcraft and that was not allowed back in those days. Once the trials has begun , John knows that he would have to admit and confuse to the affair him & Abigail had in order for her to stop her violent acts. John tries to call Abigail as a fake person. He tried to call her a fraud through a testimony without letting the true information come out. John was a man who likes to keep himself looking like he did not do anything wrong ever, he liked to keep his reputation clean. He fails in trying to frame Abigail as a fake, fraud person, so instead he calls her a whore. In the book this line "How-do you call heaven! whore! whore!"(220). John only confesses when he gets arrested and is found guilty, and is convicted as a witch. They give John an opportunity to make a public confession of his wrong doings. He had written an confession, but he rips it because he wants to say his name. He say you took everything from me, let me just have my name. By him refusing to give his personal integrity, he says that such value will take him to heaven. Elizabeth says at the end of the story in response to Hal's plea "he have his goodness now. God forbid I take it from him"(240).
Abigail Williams is another main character in my eyes. She is a very good liar and she manipulates her friends into doing what she wants them to do. In the book she says "My name is good in the village! I will not have it said my name soiled! goody Proctor is a gossiping liar!"(172). Many of her lies lead to nineteen innocent people who have died due to her lies. She is an unmarried girl and since she had affairs with John she decides to take advantage. It does not take much but a simple accusation from one of her troops is enough to convict and arrest any person in Salem, even the most well known person in that city. After that is done she has the opportunity to accuse anyone of the worst sin ever created which was devil worship.
Plays like this is kind of hard to compare with others because usually, the plays that I know of usually have to do with romance and things of that sort. One that comes to mind is The Tragedy of Julius Caesar, it was a play I read back in the ninth grade. The characters play a big role this play, the protagonist is known as the hero, yet he dies due to a downfall that occur. Over all I really like this play even though at the beginning I found it boring but like that saying don't judge a book by its cover is what I exactly did but I know now that I should not.
